Impossible using normal TV?

Post by jockyw2001 »

I'm about to install YDL 5.0.

It's not clear to me if it is just not recommended or impossible to use a normal TV. Somewhere I think I saw someone starting Linux with ydl480i or so.

Can someone clear me up?

I installed Ubuntu using an SD TV over composite and it was fine (apart from the low res obviously)

Ah cool :)

Two more questions. Do I loose the games I downloaded from the store when I (quick) format the drive in order to get 10GB for linux? Can I connect an external USB drive?

Thanks!

Yes, a format will remove everything - games, music, saves etc.

You can plug in USB drives, but I found that hot plugging didn't work - I needed to boot with the device attached for it to be found properly.

Is it possible to restore the games from backup after reformatting? I was so stupid to buy and download games before repartitioning :(

GameOS doesn't recognize the NTFS formatted USB drive. Will it recognize a FAT32 partition?

I've read that you can redownload games you've bought from the store, but I've not tried it, so I can't say for sure.

GameOS will read my 80GB FAT32 USB drive. On the Linux side, my install doesn't seem to have vfat support, so it recognises the drive but can't mount it yet.

Just sent my first support request to Networksupport. The games I bought no longer appear in the Store ...

Erp, hope you get them back! Let us know how you get on - I suspect I may need to repartition.

The "Backup/restore" option should let you save your stuff, or as you noticed they let you download stuff from the store a couple times.

To be extra safe, I often drop my HD in another machine and make an image before doing anything destructive.

As for USB hotplugging etc, it's definitely supported by the ps3pf hardware, so that is just an distro or installation problem.

Does that option only backup/restore the entire GameOS partition? Can a restore nuke the OtherOS partition?

I can also confirm that USB hotplugging *does* work in the XMB and repartitioning does not delete your username/password for the PSN. i.e. it still shows up automatically after you repartition.

I had hotplug issues in kboot when installing the distro. I haven't tried it since though.
