I wonder why sony keep releasing so many updates, right after launch.

Security? or just features...
Do you know what was added in this update Jim?

Thanks.

Apearently "Account Managment" was added under the "Friends" Submenu. But i am pretty sure that the update also includes several bugfixes and improved security

The only visible changes I've noticed are for the PS Network. They added "account management" under "friends"; nothing new, but previously you had to jump through a few hoops to find it. They also added a feature where you can write a comment that appears in a speech bubble alongside your avatar in the friends list. Also added a more obvious option to disable auto sign-in.

i seem to remember reading that these were mostly fixes for broken ps1/ps2 games. (along with security)

The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 1.11 update

Post by FreeFighter »

I'm gonna quote the site because after a while they'll update it anyway and then most stuff is gone: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates
The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 1.11 update includes the following:

General Settings Video
  • You can now select [Full Screen] under [Screen Mode] when playing video files saved on the hard disk or storage media.*
*An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models.
Network
  • You can now download and save music and video files on the hard disk under [Internet Browser].
  • You can now download the following types of content under [PLAYSTATION®Store].
    • PLAYSTATION®3 format software
    • PLAYSTATION®Network titles*
      * The term "PLAYSTATION®Network titles" refers to PlayStation format games (PS one) downloaded from PLAYSTATION®Store and PSP format games distributed electronically.
  • Simplified and traditional Chinese characters can now be displayed under [Internet Browser].
  • [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature.
Friends Other
  • The method of calculating hard disk capacity has been changed.
    * Free space on the hard disk is calculated as 1 GB (1024 x 1024 x 1024) = approx. 1,073,740,000 bytes. As a result, the free space value displayed may be less than the value that is mentioned under specifications in the product documentation. You can check hard disk free space under [Settings] > [System Settings] > [System Information].
  • Playability status with the PS3™ system has changed for some PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the search site for compatible titles.
  • New for 1.11: Some PLAYSTATION®Network features have been revised.

the ps2 bios from ps3 is the same for 1.00 and 1.02 firmwares. it changed only in 1.10. haven't checked yet in 1.11 but i think is the same. and that is for ps2 games.

i think the ps1 games (and IOP in ps2 games) are handled by an emulator

Can you elaborate on how you are able to identify the PS2 bios within the update. Have you been able to decrypt the update files?

So is this a PS2 homebrew? How to run it? Is it also possible to run PS1 homebrew?

yeah, it's a ps2 homebrew. you run it like you run on ps2. one (several?) of the ways works also on ps3 :)

Would you like to expand on that? I though you needed a modchip to run homebrew on ps2? And I don't see that trying to fit a ps2 modchip in a ps3 is going to work very well... ;-)

Great work florinsasu!
Does it only work with the EE chip models or does it also work with the PAL version?

What kind of PS2 homebrew works?

Best regards!

Now that just sounds a little funny, since we know you cannot execute anything on the PS3? (other than using the swap technique)
Care to elaborate on how you accomplished this mean feat? :-)

there's nothing special about this :P
modchips is not the only way to run code on ps2.
now that the ps2 is getting older there are rather many ways to do that.

1. modchips
2. exploits
3. pressed discs
4. linux
(hum, did i miss another one?)

4. dvdplayer updates and other utility discs are blacklisted in ps2 kernel from ps3. iirc, linux for ps2 is too.
2. the exploits i know for ps2 don't work (cannot be triggered). only an exploit in a game would be possible as the ps2 kernel in ps3 is very slim; for instance the ps1 games are not running through it.
3. you can use a pressed disc. there are several 3rd party products that you can use to run code. but i won't develop on that. see ps2 resources.

here are the bios dates (from ROMVER) for ps3 firmwares

Code: Select all

date fw
20060918 1.00, 1.02
20061101 1.10, 1.11
20061130 1.30
20061211 1.31
20061214 1.32
20061229 1.50, 1.51
the ModelName changed in fw 1.30 to SCPH-50000 (from a bogus value). ps2 kernel in ps3 looks like a work-in-progress, new patches with *magic* values in every version, unimplemented functionality on iop side. i don't know about european version yet, but i expect the mess to move to ee as well.

Unfortunately I don't have a 40G one yet.

But I've noticed that Assasin Creed comes with 1.94 fw, that was not available for download.

So does Ratchet and Clank.
1.94 only adds rumble - otherwise its the same as 1.93
