<rant>This just goes to show how screwed up the patent system is. A patent is supposed to describe the invention in such detail that anyone with average skills in the field can build it from the patent papers alone.

How exactly does a simple block diagram of a handheld computer with networking enable a computer engineer to build the device? Basically, it means ANY handheld network enabled computer meant for games is covered. So you cover anything anyone else builds while not describing how to build it yourself.

The patent office needs to be eliminated and all current patents voided. They don't help promote the advancement of science and society as they are supposed to. All they do is curb innovation and competition while enriching the bastards filing these travesties.</rant>

Nit picky point, but it is important:

If sufficiently skilled, the patent should be enough info for you to build something that repeats/infringes on the claims of the patent. It rarely has enough info to exactly reproduce the "preferred embodiment".

Ie. if you don't know how to build a "system for playing a video game on a portable game device" already, the patent isn't going to help you.

Also if expecting to learn proprietary details of their "preferred embodiment", they are often not include (not needed) -- unless those details are core to the central claims (eg: using patents to protect your proprietary protocol, not a general idea)

Yes, that's how the system works ;->
