Sure. PS3<2.10 is interesting now for coders willing to mix spu+rsx.
Then, depending of what coders will do, simple users may like it afterward.
So, if you are not coder or not interested by new techs, just get intel, it's ok.

Without rsx module, just moving big windows around is slow. With it, it becomes instant. So if you ask RSX to move a rectangle, you win. That's the kind of graphic things the module does. Now you are talking about decoding a HD video stream. I would say it depends what code is involved (which codec?...

With Ps3Rsx.ko module we may already have standard X11 API acceleration for 2D. Dunno if X11 is too far behind SDL in regard of what you need SDL to do for you in XBMC... Anway I'm not video specialist. Mplayer seems to behave very well with just Ps3Rsx.ko for that matter. I think SDL is 2D only. If...

You can : - wait for that to happen (high level api written by somebody -the hero-) - write it yourself - change your code so it can plug into existing low level apis The HUGE problem is that people that have the knowledge don't deserve to sacrifice themselves... Low level api allows to : go to the ...

IronPeter said that, theoretically, only 3D is killed by 2.10, but in practice, even the 2D acceleration is killed since I haven't seen anyone posting a successfull revival report (may still happen in future, but risky to count on it, since we don't know all the changes brought by fw 2.10). Upscalin...

Iron peter created a low level api that allows to control 70% of RSX 3D horsepower. You can comiple demos that shows 3D penguins and trolls. Whereas 2D acceleration is transparent for applications, 3D (for now) is not. Many will think also (me included), that it's a too ingrate task to make it trans...

Don't connect to internet under game os or your risk to accept 2.10 fw upgrade. 2.10=no rsx for ps3 homebrew (either linux or other os) These are the links to the 2.01 fw updates (won't be working forever) : http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2007_1120_1d8e69249aa1a5593307cf...

There are several ways to launch other os class homebrew 1) You boot PS3 in game os mode, with firmware <1.54 Some USB key is inserted with two files in /ps3/otheros - otheros.self - otheros.bld You go to system settings->install other os then system settings->default system (select other os) then p...

@ouasse, thx for the offer. But I'm beginner on PS3 indeed. I will try installing fedora7 today with a nice tutorial boxbuilder sent me. Since I go from zero, I will complete it if data are missing. I will submit it to oobles after that. Just publishing code to test on your doomed firmware will be e...

I think the next move will be to try to autodetect fw>=2.10 and have two code branches, so on fw<2.10 rsx hack is used, and otherwise, something similar based on spu is used. With that kind of intelligent library we will be able to produce homebrew code that everyone will be able to use (with better...

You need to bring changes to source code for 720p and 1080i (Of course screens that revert automatically to 480p will trick you) What you can do is use marcus first version of other os demo (without rsx stuff). Then read the post about the other os demo 1080i patch. I've wrote the 1080i patch myself...

I believe into the strong internal war between salesmen and engineers at Sony. PS3's father and his first lieutenant got sent into golden closets. But it's a tragedy, really. Engineers wanted to avoid hardware hacks by allowing homebrew. Salesmen are all money oriented but are lacking technical inte...

The number of people who reported success in dumping/reflashing is very low if we look through various forums. Success in reflashing older firmware is even less reported. It is possible that possibility of accessing the Nands directly has been predicted by Sony. People are reporting changes in the f...

I like easy maintenance. If you don't need C++ just use C. Because looking for an issue in so many separated files is ugly task (you better have one file per object in C++). But there is a nice case where you need C++. It's when you manipulate etherogenous objects in big sets, linked with sophistica...
