Afaik it should work with VLC server as well if you compile VLC with --enable-upnp

EDIT: It seems currently VLC only offers support for an optional upnp client.

MythTV on Linux works quite nice (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)

Weird, the Rev4 for 1.0/1.50 fw works fine on 3.xx and afair did work on 1.50 as well before I flashed 3.xx

A similar error as you got once happened to me, shortening the directory names resolved it.

Since the linux version of VLC only using plain linux structure and didnt use any CELL technology. It should be used the PPU of the Cell only.
