I've seen this before, and my conclusion was that UDP was getting bolloxed when the packets were coming in too fast. With UDP (as opposed to TCP), there's no guarantee of the order in which they're sent or received. It's just a theory, and doing tcpdump shows that the output from printf is indeed ar...

Re: ps2 to pc!
1) i heard from some people that xbox can be modified into a pc. can the same thing be done to ps2. can i turn it into a pc. how? I'm afraid the closest you'll get is the ps2 linux kit. As pixel mentioned, the PS2 hardware is radically different from a conventional desktop computer -- far more than...

Don't know much about cygwin -- I do everything within Linux, which has a far superior set of development tools, IMHO of course. You may find this useful: http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/programming.html There are lots of FAQs and guides at the cygwin site, did you look there before posting? Obvious...

The best way to run ps2link is to use the independence exploit to run it from the MC. There are numerous posts about it here, at ps2dev.org, and on mrbrown's site http://www.0xd6.org Sjeep has written an installer, also available at 0xd6.com -- you make and patch an ISO and burn it to a CDR and it w...

Try to track down where your program breaks by sprinkling printf() around to get a basic trace of your program's execution. This is OT, but that reminded me of a problem I've run into... Since ps2link apparently uses UDP to send its prints to the host, I've run into some issues where print statemen...

This is too vague of a question to really answer, but here are some tips: Find out what format the game you're modding accepts. Use Google. Read the game CD/DVD. Poke around. Find a tool that will convert your models to this format. Google for it, or write your own -- most model file formats are rea...

Re: About UMCDR
-The reading of audio, is a reading RAW of 2352 bytes, without correction of errors and without checksum of data .If a reading error is produced, we do not have form to know it AFAIK, this is by design - a glitch in reading audio data isn't a big deal, and the larger block size means more data can ...

AFAIK there is no 'standard' for the formats for models and/or textures. Every game probably implements it their own way, in whatever's easiest for them. They might compress stuff, or they might add stuff too -- e.g., the model format for FreeSpace on the PC adds bounding box info for easier collisi...

AFL vs. GPL
I really don't want to start a religious war, but what is the problem with GPL code vs. AFL code? I've seen posted here on a couple of occasions "we can't accept that code because it's licensed under the GPL." What are the main distinctions between the GPL and the AFL, and why is the AFL c...

First, there is a bug, or bad behavior, in smap_send. When there isn't enough space in the TX-buffer, something which happens quite easily since the buffer is only 4KB, the packet is dropped silently. Since the message-thread in ps2ip thinks the packet was sent successfully, it waits for an ack tha...

OK, here's a more helpful reply, maybe. Caveat: I'm not a professional game programmer, I'm just a regular old programmer... OT: ELF
And, strictly speaking, an object file (".o file") is "an elf file" too. It's an ELF relocatable, but it's not an ELF executable (which is what you wanted). The ELF format (OK, this is redundant, since ELF stands for "Executable and Linking Format") is just an object co...

Modding a game isn't necessarily bad; this is what's kept Freespace 2 alive -- one of my all time fave PC games. This is very distinct from warez, though. If you're making tweaks to your own game to add new levels, or whatever, I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. If you dissect thei...

Maya, etc. won't necessarily help you be a better developer (but it won't hurt). But people who know how to use Maya well are always in demand. A decent game requires a lot more than programmers -- artists, level designers, audio, etc. Not to mention project management (wince). If there was a suitab...

The independence exploit doesn't do anything to allow reading of cd/dvds. It allows you to run homebrew code, but if you insert a disc the PS2 isn't supposed to be able to read it still acts like there is no disc. Of course... If you insert a disc the PS2 can normally read (i.e. a PS2 game) you can...
