Status of banners in signatures?

Post by mrbrown »

I've got folks asking me what is the status of putting banners (ads or whatnot) in signatures. So, er, what is the status?

Well,

First of all, I am surprised you are getting more than one person asking, since so far, I have only ever seen one person put a full length graphical banner add in their .sig, you know, animated gif type thingy.

Second of all, I jumped in and made up a rule as I went along without discussing it with others first, so that was my bad. So its good that this gets discussed and a consensus made, even if it turns out that people think its ok.

But, my feeling is, they definitely should not be allowed. If someone just wants to put links in their .sig, hey, that probably won't bother most people and is probably ok. Ascii art ? A little more annoying, but I never got bothered by it.

But to go read a forum post and have all sorts of graphical advertisements jump out at you with animated changing gifs, its kinda rude and sick, don't you think ?

So that's three for no graphical sigs, and no ads. Anyone else need to chime in?

There doesn't seem to be any specific option for turning off images in signatures, no.

I agree that no advertising in signatures. Especially banner ads. The site doesn't have any advertising in the form of banner ads now, so would prefer it stays that way.

banners and ads should be abolished. if a company needs to express itself here they can always take it in the off-topic forum.

Luckily, so far, we didn't get much abuse. About "ad", maybe we can allow "personal" ad, such as
--> Visit my homepage: http://www.nobis-crew.org <--
I think we can say this can be tolerated, whadda think ?

Otherwise, of course, any commercial ad should be avoided.

Sounds good to me. Personal links - yes. Commercial links - no.
