a few ideas and questions

Post by korn16ftl »

ok so people in these Forums obviously know how the install for YDL6 for the ps3 works i have a couple of issues that im not share how to resolve and a couple questions i would like answered from some one who has play with the PS3 YDL6 a little bit more

Issues:

when i origonaly installed YDL on the PS# there are 2 things i set it up for and both of these have to do with my issues A) making the wireless work at the pain of the install my PS3 was using the hard wire LAN on the platform so obviously i set only the required fields for the wired connection and skipped the wireless set up portion of the setup (wrong choice) any how i need a little help or in detail instructions how to fix this from the YDL desktop or where to find the files to fix the fields.

obviously when i set up YDL it was on a standard tv so i followed some instructions ( dont recall what ones) to make it so the obviously/size of the screen would be fixed how ever when i tryed to set the screen res it wouldnt allow me too ( parabley just miss typed something some where or something being a linux noob) any how i said ok what ever and continued regardless (resulting in a crappy yet correctly fitting image on my TV)well now i have a HD tv and am stuck with a rather square looking image in a wider TV rather annoying does any one know how to fix either of these issues (ill try to find what exactly i did to change the screen size in the mean while)

i think this is really close to what i did all tho i know its not taken from the same thread as i used to install ill keep looking tho:
To do so edit the file (as root) /etc/kboot.conf

Change the line "default=ydl" to be "default=ydl480i".

General questions:

any one who has a PS3 knows that u have to either choose 10GB for the PS3 or 10GB for linux (im a gamer i chose 10GB for linux) any one that owns a ps3 also knows that the HDD can be freely upgraded how ever you are still left with the same choices regardless of the HDD size in the PS3.

i know in windows u can change partition size freely with acronis so i performed a google search for a version of acronis that runs on linux and found http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/ATISLin/ does any one know if i can resize partitions on the PS3 using such a tool as acronis so i may have more HDD space than 10GB to become fermilar with linux a little bit more?

my other general questions are pretty simple i have some PC games that i believe have linux ports like quake 4 maybe (unshare) and im also unshare of some steam games as well all tho i do know i can run a linux dedicated server for CS from linux (ive seen multiple results when googling how to do this w/ a win based pc) i was curious what other generic pc games have a way to put them on a linux os or if there is some kind of list

im also interested in emulation on linux and was curious as to what emulators work well with linux i am very fermilar with XBOX emulators and such and i know xport is large for windows and XBOX and was also wondering if any one has played with any of these linux emulators on the PS3 YDL or not

so far these are all of the questions i have about my YDL6 on my PS3 any feed back ideas or constructive coments are always welcome and thank you for reading my thread

As far as I know, the partition is seen as the entire HDD, you wouldn't be able to resize it above the 10GB size you've selected. However, you don't need more for the OS. Anything else can be run off a USB HDD or network mounted partition. That is what I'm doing - the 10GB (of a 250GB) for Linux OS, and 2TB with mounted files from a network server.

never though about the external/network soloution before i did it a bit and played w/ it for my modded xbox and swapped shared filesfrom PC to PC before are these the kind of things u are talking about?

is it any good to play anything like quake 4 (or some kinda game similar quake3 or unreal tourny 04) on i have herd stories of some of these games as "open source" or does it not run like all other linux OS's? is it how i picture it like a PC ?

also that guide is for fedora core 7 ill give it a go and maybe ill go back to YDL some other time (didnt get the chance to play w/ it much really tho)

the guide says to d/l - Fedora7 ppc .iso and gives a link wich is dead i went to http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ and downloaded the same titled ISO torrent will this make any diffrence or are thay both the same copys of fedora?

Should be. It's free and public stuff, so you should always be able to find a copy somewhere.

here a fix for that:

just use a external usb hard drive and you can mount it in ydl

there is a ppc program for streaming games from your pc to your ps3 running ydl 6.0 but its too choppy of an output to be playable

ppc stands for 'powerpc', the name of the generic family of processors the first part of Cell, the PS3 CPU (the part named PPU or PPE), belongs to.

There are other parts named SPU or SPE, but they are for specialists and hide the potential power of the PS3.

Anything ported to PS3, almost instantly, targets PPU, and thus has to be compatible with 'powerpc' family.

Effectively it seems that everyone on internet trashed fedora 7 iso...
You need the iso of the dvd distribution for ppc (also called 'distro'). Its size is several giga bytes.

I'm looking here http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/ looking for a mirror that still has it, without success so far.

EDIT:
Ah, I think I found one :
http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/fedora/linu ... a/ppc/iso/
Try downloading the file
http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/fedora/linu ... pc-DVD.iso
(3.37 Gb)

ok so following what was in the .RAR above im to the point that follows here:
You won't be in full screen mode, so black borders will hide most buttons.
You will be in low rez, which means you have to use a SCART cable since VGA box won't
support the signal (it's my case at least). So here's the trick to use to avoid troubles:

- Pick up the right resolution mode for your configuration
video modes (taken from http://tutoriaux.gueux-forum.net):
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA
full screen mode: <video mode> + 128
dither ON mode: <video mode> + 2048
YUV 60Hz 1080i (max rez my vga box supports). So that will be mode number : 4
My video mode will be : 4
(Adding 128 would remove black borders, but on my plasma screen I would have
hard time going in each corner with TV remote -horiz. & vert. moves- to see all stuff)

I know 60Hz is standerd for USA at least but what i want to know is my PS3 is running from the HDMI in on the TV and i beleive in 1080p wich leaves me w/ a few options either:

YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p

or
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p

so my question is what would my video mode be?

later in the tutorial you see :

append="video=ps3fb:mode:4 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/"

(instead of 4 put the value that matches the best your configuration)

So just try 37 instead of 4 and see what happens

ok one quick side question being a noob and all and constently getting flamed else where in these forums for not knowing anything would the things taught in Fedora 7 Unleashed have any relevance to FEDORA 7 on the ps3 so i may attempt to educate myself?

Well, what do you want to learn? Seems like the book would be great if you wanted the ins and outs of Linux (and Fedora 7 in particular) which is fairly similar across all machines. A quick Google search didn't imply to me whether it contains any ps3 specific chapters, but I have no idea on that really.

As for things like xorg / video / networking configuration I don't know too much about where you'd find info on that. Any decent distro who has a ps3 version should get it right out of the box, IMHO. (at leat, ubuntu did a year ago when last I tried and stuff 'just worked'). If you can't get Fedora configured nicely, you'd ask on the Fedora forums, likewise ubuntu, gentoo, etc ...

SPU and cell coding in general, has a bunch of developer docs on IBM's site.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, these forums are more focused on the last item "development", and will assume you can setup and configure your environment already.

With ps3linux going somewhat mainstream, there's been an influx of "how do i install it so i can play mame and stuff, and can ps3 do quake, kthx" type posts, so is a demonstrated need for at least some barrier of entry to draw the line at. There are other sites aimed to end-users who just want to get their shit up and running.

PS: I must point out that your question is a perfect example of the kind of behavior that will ruffle a few feathers around here. Wanting to learn is great and all, but is there any reason why you didn't google for, oh, say "fedora unleashed ps3" or something, and see if it looks relevant?
Damn, I need a decent signature!

I'm familiar with the basic configuration and usage of both Yellow Dog 6 and Fedora 7 - 9 on the PS3.

The Yellow Dog Community Board is currently down, but I have an alternate forum set up specifically for YDL6 / PS3 users if you want to look for help over there (just post in the Linux chat forum if you need basic help with Fedora):

http://forums.ps3bodega.com

I wouldn't think this forum is the place to ask for help with this sort of thing, so I won't post any more in this thread.

Good luck! :)
