NTSC/PAL/VESA/HDTV autodetection?

Post by nicp067 »

I know we can autodetect NTSC and PAL mode but can we detect VESA and HDTV?

Well, you can't... not really.

The PS2 video connector doesn't report to the system its type. Systems like the dreamcast did, making it easy to do so. NTSC and PAL can be determined by the region of the PS2. RGB or component can be set in the browser menu. So...

All you need to do is ask the user if he or she would like non-interlaced video. That combined with the rgb/component setting will tell you to use either VESA (rgb) or HDTV (component).

I'd recommend always asking the user for all modes, including NTSC and PAL (since PAL TVs can do NTSC now aka PAL60). The autodetection that many demos use is really cheesy - they should at least have the user press [X] or [O] for NTSC or PAL (like the old PS1 demos did) :P.
