that's pretty much how the xbox dashboard handles it.. dashboards are identical across regions, but if the eeprom setting is NTSC, it will offer hdtv options, if it's PAL, it will offer PAL-60 option, for example.

it won't. as I said, MDs are physically larger, and the PSP doesn't support MD or MP2 at all.

well, sony's ps2 went through 5 different laser units by now too, and sadly, every single of them is extremely cheap and prone to failure.

I doubt it will just work without a modification, I am pretty sure sony thought of that and is gonna have a check implemented.. however it MIGHT just be a matter of a small hex edit of the FW.

it's possible that the PSP indeed uses a sort of basic ftp protocol to send the firmware updates to the psp.

actually, UMD media would be quite expensive, and so would be writers.. for the simple reason that it's not widespread and not many people will actually have a use for it with HDDVD and BLURay coming.

the problem is, later on there will be official updates and the flashing CAN fail even if you do it right.

as for the charger-only flashing, that may be added for the US firmware then, since it's mentioned in the US manual.

@cory: According to the US Manual, updating the firmware will not be possible unless the PSP is hooked up to the charger, so there's no risk of the battery failing during flash.
